Quotes from Piercing FAQ

Beadless or Seamless Rings

Surgical steel, niobium and titanium seamless rings are usually made with flat ends. These rings are not suggested for new piercings. Inserting seamless rings into a new piercing can be very uncomfortable because the ends are not rounded. Closing seamless rings and smoothly aligning the ends is difficult, especially in thicker gauges and smaller diameters; softer or annealed metals are easier to manipulate. If the ends are not aligned the edges will irritate the piercing when the ring rotates through the piercing. The seam between the ends collects bacteria.

Gold seamless rings are often made with a rounded convex end and a concave end which interlock. The convex end should be inserted into the piercing.
